What do you do when all hope seems lost? What do you do when every door you try to go through gets slammed shut? What do you do when everything that can go wrong does go wrong - and not just for one day, one week, or one month? When the downward spiral seems to go on indefinately, most people get extremely discouraged. They begin to doubt their purpose, their abilities, their destiny, or the mission/project at hand, They question if it's meant to be. They question if they can be a strong leader. They question if they can still sell. They question if they've still got their edge.

You feel like a caged lion pacing back and forth getting more frustrated with every step. The discouragement turns to doubt, and the doubt turns to anger at your present circumstances. Sleep evades you. Your appetite spurns you. Solitude is the only solace you can find. Here's some alternatives to ulcers, alcohol, drugs, and sleeping pills (video below validates these recommendations - I know, I've been there!):

1. Stay Busy. Don't sit still. Keep your mind occupied. Boredom is a doubt accelerant! Begin with physical fitness. Take you aggression out in the form of exercise. I know runners who run several extra miles. I swim 1.5 hours non-stop if I have a lot on my mind. Bike, hike, walk, and channel your excess energy through the positive outlet of physical exercise. This will also help clear your mind so you can make more rational decisions. It also wears your body out allowing you to get more and better sleep which makes you more alert and productive.

2. Change the Routine. If you take the same way to work every day, take a different route. If your schedule at work consists of getting coffee and making the rounds the first half hour, working for 2 hours, taking a break, working an hour, going to lunch and repeating that in the afternoon, change your schedule. Take breaks at different times. Try sitting down at your desk the moment you get to work and get busy. Go to a different place for lunch. Don't go home and watch TV - get out of the house and do something creative (museums, arts, music, walk downtown, window shop, etc).

3. Upgrade Your Habits. If there's ever a time to committing to a healthier and more productive lifestyle, this time during your life is it. So much of winning and success has to do with your habits. But you don't create habits without discipline. When doubt, discouragement, and anger take residence in your heart and mind, there's no better time to start eating right, exercising appropriately, sleeping longer, increasing your education, learning a new sport or hobby, taking on extra assignments at work, and learning a new language or skill.

These 3 antidotes have cured my "DDA" - doubt, discouragement, and anger, without the assistance of the aforementioned destructive remedies. The destructive fix is simple (and not really a fix), and my cure requires effort. But life is full of choices, isn't it? And each of our choices has a consequence. And our current reality is a result of our choices and consequences (cause/effect). Now just may be the time to create a better picture and paint a new reality.
